Instagram's 'this song is currently not available' music error explained

August 2024 · 3 minute read

Many Instagram users are reporting errors when trying to use the music feature on Stories.

The app introduced the ability to add songs to your Story back in 2018 and there is a whole library of tracks to choose from.

Top charts, new singles, old bands, classical numbers. You name it, it’s probably on Instagram’s music library.

However, this week, users have been reporting that some songs are suddenly not available and a strange error message is appearing.

Here’s what’s going on…

‘This song is currently not available’

Lots of Instagram users have been receiving the same error message whilst trying to add music to their Story.

It’s happening to users across the globe who are getting a pop-up that says: “This song is currently not available.”

Sometime’s it also says that the song is not available in your “region” or “country”.

The message appears when adding a specific song to your Story, but other songs will usually work fine.

Strange error message explained

This error message usually appears when the specific song you are trying to add is not available in your location.

Usually, this is due to licensing issues, meaning Instagram is not legally allowed to disperse that song in the region you are in.

The same song can be used by Instagram in one country but not another as it depends on that country’s regulations.

In some places, Instagram music isn’t actually allowed at all, whereas is others, it may just be specific songs that are restricted.

If the song is not available in your location, there is unfortunately no way to change this and you will have to choose a different song.

Alternatively, it could just be an issue with your network, or Instagram could be down.

Try logging out of the app, re-installing and updating it before using Instagram again.

“this song is currently not available to you in your country or region” on Apple Music be IRKING MY NERVES. Why can’t I listen to the damn song?!?

Your business account could be the issue

The issues with music on Instagram Stories could also be occurring because you have a business account.

However, if this is the case, Instagram’s music will have disappeared completely, or you will only have a limited range of strange songs.

Instagram has three types of account, personal, business and creator, which all have different features.

In some countries, Instagram’s rules state that if you have a business account, you are unable to add music to your Instagram story at all.

So, if music has disappeared from your Instagram, or the songs are all ones you’ve never heard of, this could be the reason.

If you want to use Instagram music again, you’ll have to change your business profile to a personal or creator one.

To do this, go to settings and tap ‘account’. Then, scroll down and press ‘switch account type’.
